Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni Faces Fresh Competition From Roberto Vannacci

Italy has been catapulted to the forefront of the geopolitical strife between Russia and the European Union.
On September 2, 2026, the Financial Times published a widely-circulated article characterizing Roberto Vannacci, leader of the far-right National Future (Futuro Nazionale) party, as “Russia’s Trojan Horse” in Italy. Vannacci has been routinely criticized for opposing military and financial aid to Ukraine, bluntly stating on social media that Rome needs to “Stop giving arms and money to Ukraine. We just need to have the courage — which many don’t have.” He has also called for Italy to reset commercial and trade relations with Russia.
Political analysts observe that National Future is poised to siphon off support from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia) party in the upcoming 2027 election, with political science professor Giovanni Orsina arguing Vannacci threatens Meloni’s hold on power. Summer polling indicates National Future is drawing support from former members of Brothers of Italy who are disenchanted with the current ministry’s firm support for Ukraine.
In short, a number of think tanks and political journalists have rung the alarm bells over Vannacci’s pro-Russian sentiment. While Vannacci has not been indicted or convicted of receiving assistance from Russia, the Kremlin has historically used election interference as an instrument of geopolitical coercion around the world. Recently, analysts at the European Council on Foreign Relations commented that a potential Vannacci ministry “would actively block EU defense initiatives, veto sanctions, and leak sensitive security coordination” in the interests of Russia.
Why is Italy’s bilateral relationship with Russia such a vital subject within European politics?
Concisely put, Italy’s geographic position and distinct role as NATO’s mediterranean corridor makes it a crucial, yet vulnerable element of the continent’s collective security. Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 and the ensuing humanitarian crisis in Libya, the Italian government has been tasked with managing the flow of refugees fleeing geopolitical conflict throughout North Africa and the Middle East. In parallel, Russia’s strategic presence in the country and diplomatic relations with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar serves as a continuous headache for the EU.
In a July 2025 interview with Politico, EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner asserted “The fact that Russia is increasing its influence in Libya is precisely our concern, and that’s why we must also engage with Libya. There is certainly a danger that Russia… [will] use migrants and the migration issue as a whole as a weapon against Europe. This weaponization is taking place, and of course we also fear that Russia intends to do the same with Libya.”
Against this backdrop, Moscow has further conducted low-grade attacks against EU-member states, with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte formally blaming Russia for the Leipzig Airport drone incidents between August 4 and August 5, 2026. EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen told reporters “Europeans are faced with a hard truth that [Russian attacks on European soil] is the new normal.”
For this reason, analysts are keeping a close eye on the internal political dynamics of Italy as it has major implications for the durability of NATO’s southern flank. Only time will tell whether pro-Ukrainian factions within Italy can successfully stave off Vannacci and National Future in the prelude to the 2027 general election.
